<영어신학책 소개 및 추천>

 

이 책은 내가 맥코믹 신학교에 있을 때 공부했던 책인데, 지역사회와 함께 하는 교회에 대한 개념에 관심이 많았던 나에겐 너무나도 유익했던 책이다. 특히 책의 저자이신 슈라이터 교수님이 직접 클래스로 오셔서 강의도 해주신 적이 있어서 더욱 기억에 남는 책이다. 이 책은 1985년에 처음 출판된 이후 30년 동안 문화다원주의의 신학적 의미를 이해하는 데에 가장 기본이 되는 책 중 하나였고 30년이 지난 2015년 재출판 되었다.

 

책의 내용은 간결하고 이해하기 편한 방식으로 써졌다. 영어에 어느 정도 자신이 있다면 그리 어렵지 않게 읽을 만한 책이다. 책의 저자인 슈라이터 교수는 책의 핵심 질문을 다음과 같이 말하고 있다: 신앙공동체는 그리스도에 대한 그들의 경험을 구체적인 상황 속에서 어떻게 표현해야할까?

 

책의 내용 중에 특히 3장의 내용은 일련의 질문을 통해서 슈라이터 교수는 독자들에게 그들의 문화를 다루는 방법을 제시한다: 1) 문화 듣기 2) 문화 이해 3) 문화 성찰 4) 신앙공동체가 “지역신학”을 이행하는 방법. 그리고 4장에서는 “지역신학”에 대해 더욱 자세히 설명하고 이를 문화적 접근으로 확장시킨다. 신학이 어떻게 우리가 살아가는 지역사회에서 ‘지혜’가 되고, 신학이 어떻게 우리가 살아가는 세상에서의 ‘믿음의 실천’이 될 수 있는지 깊은 통찰을 제공한다.

 

초판이 나온 지 35년이나 지난 오늘날에도 이 책은 여전히 교회에 필요한 방향성을 제시한다. 상황만 조금 달라질 뿐이지 그리스도인들은 언제나 복음을 그들이 살아가는 사회와 문화 속에 뿌리를 내리는 방법을 고민해야 되기 때문이다. 이런 고민을 하고 있는 모든 그리스도인들에게 이 책을 적극 추천한다.
